In a world where slogans like “our people, our pride” echo through various spheres of life, it’s time to question if these words are more than just lip service. The value of individuals in society cannot be over-emphasized, yet the practice of genuine respect often falls short. Whether in career, academic, religious, social, family, political, or financial contexts, the Respect Agenda is sometimes lost amidst social hierarchies and personal agendas.
Acknowledging the invaluable contribution of individuals to any human endeavor has led to the creation of numerous catchphrases emphasizing the importance of people. However, the gap between rhetoric and reality remains glaring. Many individuals base their interactions on social status or hierarchical position, leaving some feeling marginalized or unseen. Thus, managing upwards only.
It is time we call “a spade a spade” and make a clarion call to everyone to Uphold what I refer to, as the Respect Agenda.
To bridge this gap, it’s imperative that we cultivate a culture of respect in every aspect of our lives. Here are my thoughts on some practical ways to uphold the Respect Agenda:
Punctuality: Being mindful of time demonstrates respect for others’ schedules and commitments. I have witnessed some leaders walking in late to meetings and expecting everyone to be seated waiting for them and not bothering to apologize for their lateness. Some claim it is testing one’s patience but I beg to differ on that score. Leaders should set an example by arriving on time for events and acknowledging when they fall short.
Communication: The act of responding to emails, calls, and messages reflects basic courtesy and professionalism. The premium placed on a person is evident in the way we respond to their communications. We have to cultivate “netiquette” by acknowledging messages even if a detailed response is not immediately possible, a holding response would do.
Combatting Bullying: Eliminate all forms of bullying tactics, whether through words or actions. Corporate bullying has become a common phenomenon without the perpetrators sometimes being aware of it. These behaviours foster toxic environments which impacts negatively on productivity. It is important to say “stop” to all forms of bullying. Organisations must also promote speak-up policies. We must create psychologically safe environments where team members feel valued and heard.
Avoiding Intimidation: Intimidation tactics undermine trust and hinder collaboration. Intimidation is a clear abuse of power and tends to make people recoil into their shells. True leadership is about inspiring, not instilling fear.
Addressing micro-aggressions: Recognize and eliminate subtle forms of discrimination or bias. Every individual deserves to be treated with dignity and respect, regardless of their background or status. Use power positively.
Finally, if we truly care and value people, then the Respect Agenda must be at the forefront of our interactions. It’s time to move beyond slogans and rhetoric and embrace a culture where everyone is recognized for their inherent worth. By upholding principles of respect in every area of our lives, we can create a more inclusive and compassionate society where everyone can thrive and be psychologically safe. Remember that life is unpredictable and so is every form of leadership; so we must endeavour to treat everyone with respect.
