Reflecting upon life, I have come to the realization that while we meticulously plan for all other activities, we often neglect planning for ourselves.
Businesses and organizations assemble people, including ourselves, to plan for the year ahead. They set key performance indicators and carefully craft what success would look like. Then, they sit back to periodically review their progress, applauding their actions if they are on course and re-strategizing if there are gaps to bridge and impediments hindering the delivery of their goals.
Just as we support others in strategizing for organizations, it is crucial that we plan for ourselves and work toward realizing our personal goals.
Have we set goals for our lives? It is said that research has proven that only 3% of people who set goals achieve them. Even if that statistic is true, what prevents us from being part of that minority, that works toward achieving their goals?
Personally, it does not matter whether you plan at the beginning of the year or in the middle of the year; the important thing is to “think on paper,” as indicated by Brian Tracy in his book Eat that Frog.
Below are a few areas we can consider in our personal roadmap. We can set our goals around these thematic areas in line with the Wheel of Life:
- Spiritual life
- Family life
- Financial life
- Career
- Education
- Intellectual
- Health and wellness
- Personal development
- Social and recreation
- Giving back to society (Charity)
In all of these areas, we have to think about how we intend to grow. Consider the various activities and initiatives we would have to engage in to accomplish our purpose. In addition, we have to identify unhealthy habits that can impede our success and deliberately work hard to drop them.
Timelines for the “Me strategy” are important. When goals are not well-defined and not time-bound, nothing gets done.
In this journey, an enabler is to have an accountability partner – a credible and reliable person within our social circles who will keep us in check.
Crafting your path to achievement may not be easy. It requires dedication and sacrifice. Challenges may occur. If you are unable to achieve within a period, keep working at it, do not give up, roll it over, and stay resilient. Show some love to yourself by having “a roadmap to you”.
