Angry people want you to see how powerful they are; loving people want you to see how powerful you are. In anger, one no longer has the presence of mind to think rationally. A hard lesson to learn but disrespect will close doors that apologies cannot reopen.
Anger and disrespect do not form a key ingredient of communication. Being angry and blunt does not correlate to being transparent. Communication is not verbalizing what we think but ensuring that others hear what we mean to convey.
As a child, a vivid memory is being given ‘the look’ by my Dad to convey displeasure or anger without a word being uttered. That was scary! Communication doesn’t really work like that today with the Millennials and Gen Z’s. So, what does work. Typing a message on a chat platform using language that are familiar with? Rarely!
Experience tells us that they want to understand why they are being asked to do something or why something is the way it is. It is no longer mere acquiescence like from my generation. So, its time, we, the older generation rethink and relearn how we should communicate with the new generation?
Respect is to have the ability to see a person as they are and to acknowledge their individuality. From a very young age, we have to teach children to verbalize what they feel so they don’t grow up to shut down in expressing what they feel – unless it is happiness. The flipside of it is for them to be trained to expect a voice of experience to help them understand what they are going through.
Organizations today face quiet resignation where people do just enough to keep their jobs but are not really productive. There are various reasons for this. One of them is the fact that they feel disrespected. A rude boss makes them feel unvalued and unloved. I am sure there will always be another side of the story. Train them, provide feedback for improvement and if need be, and let them go but let it not transcend into a disgraceful rant filled with demeaning verbiage.
To end this cycle, help people find something that they feel passionate about. Learn to recognize the signs of such a person. Find what they love and give them the ability to do what they love. Trust in your conviction. As employers, lets strive to make employees feel happy, feel cared for in a space they can commit themselves to. Enthuse them with your passion.
Respect for ourselves guides our morals; respect for others guides our manners. The breaking of a wave cannot explain the whole sea. To win in the marketplace you must first win in the workplace.
Respect Matters!
