Your children don’t belong to you. You’re on borrowed time with them. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to build a better human being, not to build a mini version of yourself. Help them become the best them, not the best you.
Until we change our thinking, we will always recycle our experiences. If humanity is to live in the future in a socially right way, humanity must educate its children in a socially right way.
As leaders in the corporate world, we have a tendency to do exactly that, try to create clones of ourselves. By doing so, we are stealing their best and denying the organization their best.
One of the reasons why the corporate world struggles with Millennials and Gen Z’s is instead of using their strengths to bring about the discipline and work ethic, we bring in the old way of doing things to try to complement their strengths, if at all.
In the olden days it was all about putting food on the table; however, with the younger generation, amongst their top priorities is leading a balanced life whilst being connected to an organization that has a purpose that they can relate to. This clash of ideals leads to a lot of disengagement and attrition.
The complexities of growing up in the world today is very different and challenging than in the days of old. Which means all forms of society needs to step up to the challenge – be it the way we parent, the way they are educated, the way they live in the society, the way they work etc.
I personally feel that the importance that is being given to the nuclear family and individualism has destroyed the very fabric of good living. It was the society, in the past, that made us all live as a family irrespective of our caste, colour or social standing. We were there for each other. A clip around the year by anyone for being naughty was the norm. Today that will probably lead to an ego battle between parents, if not a lawsuit. These social ills have ramifications and spill into the workplace, whether we like it or not.
Fame is a vapor, popularity an accident, and riches take wings. Only one thing endures and that is character. Let us go back to being parents who do not outsource parenting, who do the hard grind of living a value-based life at home as that is usually the foundational school of a child.
Believe in a higher purpose and yourself for the universe never gives you a dream that matches your budget. It is not checking your bank account; it is checking your faith.
Faith and society matter!
